Demo: How to Construct a Tunnel Book: Studio 310, Luz Marina Ruiz
Tunnel books contain pages held together by folded paper strips on each side. Accordion-folded paper binds the pages together. The overall effect is an illusion of depth and layering of images.

The Art of the Book, 2023: Luz Marina Ruiz
Luz Marina Ruiz has had a career focused on printmaking, book arts, and installation with themes relating to water. The works are visual journeys, not literal representations of water. They are meant to remind us of our planet's fragility and essential connection and dependence on water for our survival. Although she works with challenging themes, the work relates to water's beauty, mystery, whimsy, and power. It’s a way to hang on to optimism and honor what is at stake.
The initial concepts for "Resiliency" were formed during the political turmoil, ardent division, and uncertainty in this country brought on by the previous administration. Ruiz began to make sketches as a way to process these difficult times. The drawings made their way onto a 36” square sheet of linoleum: a boat wrapped in turbulent waters, a mast/white flag for optimism, and birds as messengers of peace and hope.
In the summer of 2022, the artist was awarded a grant through the California Society of Printmakers AIR program to work at In Cahoots Residency (ICR) to complete the Resiliency project for the Art of the Book 2023 exhibit. “While at ICR (In Cahoots Residency),” she said, “I finished carving the linocut. My previous linocut-based artists’ books were printed in black and white and hand colored with watercolor and gouache. During my residency, I chose a different approach to color. I printed elongated, colorful stencil monotypes to be printed under the linocut. The underprints were loosely created with organic shapes supporting the carved linoleum's graphic quality.”

Senderos (Pathways) Xilopainting, Acrylic on wood panels, Diptych plus details, Sold on the Collector’s Preview Evening
48 Pillars, February 25- April 8, 2023
Twenty-four local Bay Area artists produced two companion pieces or diptychs on identical-sized panels. The panels exactly ringed the gallery - 48 works total. It is essentially a “structural constraint” show. The artists are unconstrained in subject matter, except to the extent that works need to be a series, but they are constrained in format.
We are presented with various pathways throughout our lives, causing us to make choices. However, we never truly know if we are taking the “right” path. Only in retrospect can we see where we have traveled and if the journey has supported our purpose. This piece has several pathways and ladder shapes. Sometimes, we are ascending, and other times, descending. Trust and optimism propel us forward, always seeking a path that resonates within us.

Reflections - National Juried Show
The Lake Merritt photos were taken on my daily walks around the lake during a challenging time in my life. The outings brought me solace and energized my creative process. I captured light, reflections, and shadows that appeared across the surface of the water. Each walk presented me with rich abstract images; myriad shapes, colors, patterns, and textures in constant change. The walks became my daily reflections on life and reminded me that life is always shifting and in flux. Change is one of the constants we have in life; the lake was there to reflect that back to me.
Nature is our best teacher.
